As a place to live or a place to visit, the image of Kinross-shire that we present to the outside world is all important. While many who chose to settle in the area value the quality of life around Loch Leven, it is often too easy to become complacent about the state of our environment and as a result lay ourselves open to all manner of criticism. The most recent edition of "The Rough Guide to Scotland," for example, describes the town of Kinross as a place where 'charm has been eroded' and where 'amorphous splodges of modern development threaten to nudge it into the loch." If that is the way other people see us then every one of us should stand back and take a critical look at our contribution to the local landscape. This is where the Civic Trust has a role to play. In encouraging a sense of local pride, architectural awareness and environmental responsibility we are trying to ensure the survival of a quality of life that is not only appreciated by Kinross-shire folk but also the envy of all who pass this way. At the end of the day we are largely responsible for the quality of life we enjoy. In the words of the human ecologist Sir George Stapledon human progress is 'more a matter of judgement of the people than of the decisions of statesmen'.
