In AD 728 we find the first mention of the name Moncrief (Monaigh craebi) (Monidcroib) comes at the battle fought at Moncrief a Hill to the North West of Abernethy between the Tay and the Earn between Aengus and Alpin in which Aengus was victorious.

The battle of Monaigh craebi between the Picardachaib themselves. Angus and Alpin  fought that battle, and the victory was with Angus; and the son of Alpin was slain there, and Angus took his power.
